What is PEP?
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) after a potential HIV exposure to prevent becoming infected with HIV. You must start PEP within 72 hours following possible HIV exposure, but the sooner you start PEP, the better. If you’re prescribed PEP, you must take it once or twice daily for 28 days. PEP is very helpful in preventing HIV when administered correctly, but it is not 100% effective.
PEP is a good idea if, in the last 72 hours, you:
- Had unprotected anal or vaginal sex with a partner whose HIV status you may not know
- Had a condom rip during sex
- Shared injection equipment
- Experienced sexual assault
